Homemade Shalgam Ka Bharta Recipe

Homemade Shalgam Ka Bharta Recipe

Servings: 4-5 pax

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time : 25 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 500 gms shalgam/turnip

  • 2 big tomatoes puréed

  • 1 cup peas ( frozen/fresh)

  • 1 chopped green chilli

  • 1/2 tbsp chopped garlic

  • 1 tsp chopped ginger

  • 1/2 tbsp chopped green garlic leaves ( optional)

  • 1 whole red chilli

  • 1/4 tsp asefodita

  • 1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric power

  • 1/2 tbsp chilli powder

  • 1/2 tbsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • salt as per taste

  • 4 tbsp ghee

  • some chopped coriander leaves

Method:

  1. Peel, wash and chop the shalgam into big cubes.

  2. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in the cooker then add the chopped shalgam with 1 tsp salt and fry the shalgam for a minute. Then add 1 cup water to it. Close the lid and cook upto 4 whistles.

  3. When the pressure is released open the cooker and mash the shalgam with a masher to form a fine paste. Keep aside for future use.

  4. Take a kadai heat 2 tbsp ghee then add the jeera when it splutters add the asefodita. Saute the garlic and ginger for a second then add the tomato puree and green chilli. Cook till drops of ghee is seen on the sides of the kadai.

  5. Add all the dry spices, salt, garlic leaves, green peas and 1/2 cup water. Cover and cook again for 5 minutes on low flame.

  6. Add the shalgam paste and cook on low flame for 5 more minutes or till drops of ghee are seen on the top.

  7. Remove in a serving bowl and garnish with some chopped coriander leaves and one tbsp ghee.

  8. Serve this yummy bharta with chapati or parathas.
