Homemade Lobia ( Black Eyed Bean ) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Lobia or chawli ( Black Eyed Bean)

  • 2 onions chopped finely

  • 1 green chilli chopped finely

  • 1/2 tbsp ginger chopped finely

  • 2-3 pinch asafoetida

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp jeera ( cumin seeds)

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • 1 tbsp amchur (mango) powder

  • salt as per taste

  • coriander leaves for garnishing

Method:

  1. Clean , wash and soak lobia in water for 5-6 hours or overnight.

  2. Pressure cooker the lobia with 4-5 cups of water for 10-15 minutes on medium flame. Keep aside with the water.

  3. .Heat 2-3 tbsp oil in a heavy based vessel, add asafoetida, jeera and mustard seeds. When it splutters add the green chilli, ginger, turmeric powder and chopped onions and cook till it is soft.

  4. Make a paste by adding 1/2 cup water to the amchur powder.

  5. Add it to the onions and cook on low flame for 4- 5 minutes.

  6. Add all the dry spices leaving out the garam masala. Saute the onion and masala for a minute on low flame.

  7. Add the cooked lobia with the water to the masala and cook for another 5-10 minutes. If the gravy is too thick a little water can be added.

  8. Finally add the garam masala and mix well.

  9. Remove in a serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves .

    Serve this delicious lobia with rice or chapati.
