Homemade Kala Chana Kofta Recipe

Homemade Kala Chana Kofta Recipe

Total Time : 45 minutes

Ingredients for Kofta:

  • 1 cup kala chana ( black chickpeas)

  • 1 small onion cut into big pieces

  • 2 green chillies chopped into big pieces

  • 3-4 garlic pods or 1/2 tbsp chopped garlic

  • 1 tsp jeera ( cumin seeds )

  • 1 tsp coriander seeds

  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 2 tbsp besan ( gram flour)

  • salt as per taste

Ingredients for Gravy :

  • 2 small tomatoes puréed

  • 1 tej patta ( bay leaf )

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 tsp chopped ginger

  • 1 tsp chopped garlic

  • 2 chopped green chillies

  • 1 tsp jeera ( cumin seeds)

  • 1/4 tsp asefodita

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp chilli powder

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1/2 tsp garam masala

  • 1 tbsp kasuri methi ( dried fenugreek leaves )

  • 1/4 cup curds ( yogurt)

  • salt as per taste

  • some chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

Method:

  1. Wash clean and soak the chana in water for 7-8 hours. Drain and keep aside.

  2. In a grinder jar add the chana, chopped onion, garlic, green chillies, jeera and coriander seeds.Grind into a fine paste.

  3. Remove in a bowl mix the turmeric, salt, chopped coriander leaves and besan.

  4. Roll into small medium size oblong or round shape balls and keep aside for future use.

  5. In a kadai heat 2 tbsp oil then add the tej patta, cinnamon stick, jeera and asefodita. When the jeera splutters saute the chopped garlic and ginger for a second then add the tomato puree and cook on medium to low flame stirring at intervals till oil is seen on the sides of the vessel.

  6. Add the turmeric, chilli, coriander powder, salt, kasuri methi and cook for 1-2 minutes.

  7. Add the curds and keep stirring continuously so that it does not curdle.Add 2-3 cups water and cook till it boils.

  8. Add the kofta balls then cover and simmer on low flame till the balls float on the top.Open the cover and stir. Allow it to cook for another 5 minutes or till the balls are cooked and the gravy thickens.

  9. Remove in a serving dish and garnish with some chopped coriander leaves.

Enjoy this yummy kala chana kofta with rice, chapati or parathas.
